Founded in 1969, possibly the most respected American film presentation organization,the society presents a 363-day season that includes premieres of new films from both new and established directors; major retrospectives; in-depth symposia and high profile events. The Film Society also hosts two world-class international festivals: the New York Film Festival, and New Directors/New Films. It also publishes the respected cinematic journal, Film Comment. Each year the organization presents its annual Gala Tribute honoring legendary stars and industry leaders at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Anthology Film Archives is an international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of film and video with a particular focus on American independent and avant-garde cinema and its precursors found in classic European, Soviet and Japanese film. In addition to being a public movie theater, Anthology is a film museum, archive, research library, and art gallery. After 35 years in existence, Anthology remains the only non-profit organization of this type in New York.

The Museum is located on the site of the Astoria Studio, built in 1920. The history of the building itself is extraordinary, from it's earliest days as Paramount's East Coast production facility, and then an independent film production house to latter years as the US Army's Signal Corps Photographic Center which made films to speed the training of young enlisted men. Since 1985 it has been turned into a non-profit museum dedicated to public education , by presenting exhibitions and screenings and maintaining a film collection.
