A Landmark Cinema since 1997, the theater is located in the heart of downtown Royal Oak and surrounded by a number of galleries, restaurants and other unique businesses. The theater was originally built in the early 1940s as a single-screen theater. Today, the theater features independent film and foreign language cinema. Every summer the theater hosts a midnight series, offering new classics and hometown favorites in horror and cult film.

Located and run by the Detroit Institute of Arts, the theater has featured the finest in classic, world and independent films for more than 32 years. Films are shown in the DIA's 1,100 seat theater, which is equipped to project all films in their correct aspect ratio exactly as their directors originally intended.
